MICROWAVE APPLICATION OF NONLINEAR TECHNIQUES,
Abstract
Application of the nonlinear inversion technique to ground-based emission measurements in the 60 GHz oxygen absorption band is described. The Prony algorithm is used to infer spline function approximations to the tropospheric temperature profile. Numerical studies indicate that only three parameters may be inferred from the radiometric data. The nonlinear inversion method has been applied to apparent temperature data obtained at frequencies 66.5, 67 and 69 GHz. The results of nonlinear inversion are presented and an analysis of the agreement with observations is given. A method is described for correcting apparent temperatures for the effect of antenna pattern. Calculated and observed apparent temperatures have been corrected with this method and some resulting brightness temperatures are shown. (Author)
