TEMPORALLY DISTINCT STAGES IN PAIRED-ASSOCIATE VERBAL LEARNING,

Abstract

Two experiments to study possible differences in transfer between very early and early stages of List 1 learning are reported. Eight groups of Army enlisted men, 20 per group, learned one of four transfer paradigms to a List 1 criterion of either at least one item correct or at least half of the list correct, and a List 2 criterion of all correct. Paradigms used were A-B, C-A; A-B, A-D; A-B, A-Br; and the A-B, C-D control for warm-up and learning to learn. In Experiment 1, consonant vowel consonants were used for all verbal units; in Experiment 2, the List 2 responses were changed to high frequency of occurrence real words. Faster List 2 learning by the higher degree of List 1 learning in Experiment 1, but not in Experiment 2, was interpreted as supporting a two-stage conception of paired-associate learning.
