THE URP-1 DEVICE FOR DECIPHERING PUNCHED CARDS,

Abstract

An 80-column punched card reader whose construction is based on the K80-6 card verifier is described. The URP-1 reader decodes punched apertures and simultaneously prints this information (number from 0 to 9) at a speed of 10 characters/sec on the 12th card row. The URP-1 unit contains an input hopper, card stacker, multiple pass unit, transport unit, reading station, printing station, and control and power supply units. The reading is accomplished by means of ten photodiodes. The printing unit does not use a ribbon; instead, the print wheel is supplied with ink (through a system of rubber rollers) from a felt roller which is dipped in ink every 10,000 cards. The operation of the card reader is described and mechanical details are presented. At present, URP-1 units are being tested in a laboratory and preparations are being made for their mass production.
