CONVECTIVE AND BOILING HEAT TRANSFER UNDER HIGH CENTRIFUGAL ACCELERATIONS.

Abstract

This report describes the construction of a centrifugal boiler capable of operating at centrifugal accelerations of 8,400 g with a 1 in. water depth. The power dissipation from 2 heating elements approximately 9 in. long each is 11 1/2 K.W. to produce flux of 1,000,000 Btu/hr. - sq. ft. Convective heat transfer to 1280 g can be represented by: Nu - 0.15 (Ra) exp. 0.363; 2x10 to the 7th power < Ra < 8 x 10 to the 10th power. Boiling heat transfer is presented in graphical form. A calculational procedure was developed for determining the bubble size departing from solid surfaces with and without inertial forces taken into account. (Author)
