KINETICS OF SYNTHESIS AND DECOMPOSITION REACTIONS OF IONIC COMPOUNDS CONTAINING N-F CATIONS.
Abstract
NF4AsF6 has been prepared by the glow-discharge reaction of NF3, F2 and AsF5 at -80C. The hydrolysis of the product to NF3 and O2, rather than nitrogen oxides is confirmed. Thermal decomposition studies have been initiated. Attempts to prepare NF4BF4 by the same method have yield mixtures of O2BF4 and salts hydrolyzing to nitrogen oxides. Preliminary experiments indicate that VF5 may react with O2F2 to yield small amounts of O2VF6. Ammonium perbromate (NF4BrO4) has been prepared by neutralization of NBrO4 with ammonia. It is a white, crystalline salt, having a density of 2.5. Its solubility in water and organic solvents is similar to that of NH4ClO4. It is less hygroscopic than NH4BrO4. Its thermograms indicate exotherms at 186 and 209C. At 170C, decomposition is complete, yielding H2O, Br2, N2, N2O and NO2. (Author)
