A FAMILIARIZATION WITH LATERAL OR SIDE-SCANNING SONARS.

Abstract

A typical side-scanning sonar system is described, and comments are presented concerning its use in various kinds of sea-floor surveys. Interpretations of the graphic records are discussed. Typical problems encountered in side-scanning surveys are illustrated and described. Discussion of these problems contributes toward a fuller understanding of some of the causes of inaccuracies and misrepresentations of the bottom that appear on graphic records from side-scanning sonar traverses. An appendix includes notes from a field log book prepared during side-scanning sonar surveys and suggestions for improvements in obtaining better side-scanning sonar data. (Author)
