A MILITARY PERSONNEL PRICE INDEX

Abstract

This supplement of a price index for military personnel is the first step in an overall improvement in deflating to constant dollars the purchases of goods and services by the Department of Defense and it tested the adequacy of using borrowed civilian-type indexes in the military-personnel context. The index developed for the price changes in the 'Military-personnel budget' category showed an increase about 12 percent faster than the military-personnel subindex computed previously. When the new military personnel index was used to deflate military-personnel expenditures, the change in the aggregate military price index was less significant even though military personnel make up approximately 30 percent of the DOD budget.
