THE INFLUENCE OF MESSAGE ORGANIZATION AND STYLE STRATEGIES ON COMPREHENSION AND DECISION-MAKING. REPORT NO. 1. STRATEGIES FOR DEVELOPING MESSAGES THAT MUST COMPETE WITH ANTAGONISTIC MESSAGES.

Abstract

The document is the first in a series of three dealing with the influence of strategies of preparing messages and their relation to comprehension, decision change, and attitude change. It concerns strategies of preparing messages which are preceded or followed by other messages that attempt to neutralize the information presented in the basic message. Subjects received messages written according to either constructive or refutational argument structures. These two kinds of messages were then written either with or without the use of information redundancy. Half of the subjects read these messages prior to reading an attack message; and half of them read an attack message first. The attack messages used arguments that were either the same as or different from those presented in the basic message. (Author)
