THE INFLUENCE OF MESSAGE ORGANIZATION AND STYLE STRATEGIES ON COMPREHENSION AND DECISION-MAKING. REPORT NO. 3. THE INFLUENCE OF PERSONAL STYLE, TYPE OF EXPLANATION, AND EMOTIONAL APPEAL OF A MESSAGE ON DECISION-MAKING AND CERTAINTY OF DECISIONS.

Abstract

This is the third of three reports on the influence of message organization and style on comprehension and decision making. The present study is concerned with three types of message strategies. One strategy studied was the use of second-person pronouns in messages, as opposed to third-person pronouns. A second strategy studied was the form that an emotional appeal for action should take at the end of a message. Should it appeal to the reader himself, to 'the good of your family,' or 'for the good of society.' Third, different ways of organizing explanations of some key point in the message were studied.
