ON THE EFFECT OF VERTICAL EDDY TRANSPORT ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF NEUTRAL NITROGEN COMPONENTS IN THE D-REGION.

Abstract

The vertical distribution of neutral nitrogen components (N, NO, N2O and NO2) from 50 km to 100 km is studied theoretically. Two atmosphere models are presented, one where the number densities are determined by photochemistry alone and one where also vertical eddy transport is considered. It is shown that vertical eddy transport modifies the photochemical model in a drastic way and brings the theoretical results in much closer agreement with observations. (Author)
