OPTICAL GENERATION BY A SCATTERING MEDIUM WITH NEGATIVE RESONANCE ABSORPTION,

Abstract

Theoretical studies were made of the optical generation of a scattering medium with a negative resonance absorption for a case where the mean free path of a photon due to scattering is much shorter than the dimensions of the scattering region. The possibility of laser action in such a system was pointed out in an earlier paper. The present laser is a variant of a laser with a nonresonant (negative) feedback and the study of its characteristics is topical from the standpoint of producing highly stable optical frequency standards. In this study, the author derives for such a laser (1) the generation threshold, (2) the dynamics of the steady-state stationary regime and spectral narrowing, and (3) the limiting spectral width under generation conditions.
