A MODULAR, CENTRALIZED SYSTEM OF PRODUCTION MONITORING AND CONTROL (MCS),

Abstract

A centralized control system for a data processing center is described. The design minimizes the amount of modification necessary in units it controls, but at the same time makes allowance for expanding the system whenever demand warrants. Two levels of control are distinguished: between localized (e.g., intradepartmental) units and between aggregates of these units. In both levels, central processors use computers with program interrupt features. For remote control, additional processors are used. The peripheral equipment consists of analog and digital input units, telegraph signal input units, a 'Dispatcher' system, a high-speed printer, an alphanumeric printer, a puncher-reader for telegraph tape and cards and a storage file using magnetic drums and tape. The author analyzes the possible ways of expanding this system.
