ELECTRIC ARCS IN TRANSVERSE MAGNETIC FIELDS.

Abstract

For an electric arc in a transverse magnetic field, the magnetic pumping effect generates certain flow patterns within an arc cross sectional plane. These flow patterns, namely; jet flow and dual vortex, lead to momentum exchange between the current-carrying arc plasma and its nonconductive surroundings. Momentum is transported either across the arc surface boundaries (transverse mode) or along the arc axis (axial mode). Since the net transverse momentum exchange can be expressed as a function of the arc current, the magnetic field o, the arc channel radius o, and the arc curvature, one may determine the arc shape for the different momentum exchange modes.
