HORIZONTAL TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS IN THE LOWER STRATOSPHERE OVER THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE,
Abstract
The geographic distribution of horizontal temperature gradients in the lower stratosphere over the northern hemisphere throughout the year is examined. The contribution of the thermal wind to the zonal component of the wind in the regions of steepest temperature gradient is calculated from the available data. The horizontal gradients along the meridians are calculated from charts of average temperature at the 100 and 50 mb isobaric surfaces for every 5 degrees of latitude and 10 degrees of longitude. The magnitude of the gradient in the middle lattitudes is smaller than in winter. Again in summer between 50 and 40 degrees north latitude over Central Asia, there is a region of large horizontal temperature gradients. The thermal wind occurring in regions of high gradient is said to be the chief reason for the increase and decrease of the zonal wind throughout the year. (Author)
