MAGNETO-OPTICAL PHENOMENA IN THE SPECTRUM OF A CaF2 - Eu2+ CRYSTAL,

Abstract

Splitting of the resonance line for CaF2 - Eu2+ was studied in both absorption and emission spectra. When the magnetic field was parallel to the fourth-order axis (H sub 0 parallel to (001)), the spectrogram plainly revealed asymmetry in intensity of the Zeeman component relative to the line not affected by the field. This asymmetry is clearly due to thermal freezing of the ions in strong magnetic fields. At low temperatures this occurs on Zeeman sublevels of the ground excited states.
