A GENERAL-PURPOSE, ANALOG-DIGITAL, IMMEDIATE-ACCESS DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM FOR INVESTIGATING OBJECTS WITH GENERAL-PURPOSE DIGITAL COMPUTERS,

Abstract

A general-purpose, transistorized analog-digital system for acquisition and conversion of data is described. Intended for probabilistic studies of chemical, physics of heat, and other processes, the system can accommodate either direct inputs from sensors monitoring the above processes or an indirect input from graphs realizable either automatically or semi-automatically. System output is also either direct (coupled to machine actuating mechanisms) or indirect, where information is entered on perforated tapes or punched cards. Basic system blocks are the voltage-time interval-number A/D converter providing a parallel code output and a parallel-to-serial-parallel code converter. Code conversion is required for 5-channel perforated tape, which is used as input to digital computers. In addition to coded signals from the monitored processes, the tape carries auxiliary codes which are necessary to meet the input requirements of Minsk-1 and Minsk-2 computers. In direct computer entry mode, the codes are treated differently to make them compatible with photoelectric computer input readers.
