THEORY OF FLAME STABILITY,

Abstract

An analysis was made of the stability of normal combustion of a premixed gas with respect to small hydrodynamic perturbations. Based on the linearized Navier-Stokes equation and a relationship derived previously by the author for the interaction of the flame zone of finite thickness and the hydrodynamic perturbation, equations were derived which indicate that viscosity has a stabilizing effect on normal combustion. This finding is in contrast to Einbinder's theoretical result which predicted a destabilizing effect of viscosity. (Author)
