QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF p-PHTHALIC ACID BY INFRARED SPECTRUM,

Abstract

A quantitative method is described for determining p-phthalic acid in synthetic resins, synthetic fibers, and plastifiers by infrared absorption spectrum. The apparatus used was a infrared spectrometer. Infrared absorption spectra of p- and o-phthalic acid in N, N-dimethyl formamide in varying concentrations from 5 mg to 25 mg/ml were spectrographed. Results showed that a p-phthalic acid absorption band peak occurred at 754/cm, and o-phthalic acid peaks at 819 and 769/cm. A linear relationship was shown when the value of log I0/I (relative intensity) was plotted against corresponding concentration. Experimental results also showed that o-phthalic acid had some effect on p-phthalic acid determination that when the spectrum of an unknown sample was compared with the knowns containing both p- and o-phthalic acid.
