ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF SOLID OXIDES. XI. La2O3-CaO SYSTEM,
Abstract
In view of the previously investigated electrical conductivity of a solid solution with the fluorite-type lattice, the subject of this study was to determine the effect of the change of the crystal structure of the electrolyte on electrical conductivity. For this purpose the La2O3-CaO system was investigated. In addition, two specimens of the La2O3 + BeO and La2O3 + MgO systems were also investigated since these systems do not form solid solutions. The electrical conductivity measurements were carried out by the EMF method. The nature of the electrical conductivity was investigated under various conditions. In one case the solid electrolyte was placed in contact with gas atmospheres containing high partial pressure of oxygen and in the second case a gas mixture containing very low partial pressure of oxygen was fed to the electrode. The transport numbers of ions were measured by the modified gravimetric method. The results of the measurements show that even small additions of calcium oxide cause a significant increase in the electrical conductivity of lanthanum oxide. The increase in the conductivity upon further addition of calcium oxide is less pronounced. (Author)
