THE 'RUTA-701' READER,

Abstract

A report is given on the development of the 'Ruta-701' reader designed for reading typed or handwritten symbols from multiple-line blank forms. The goal of the development was the creation of a device to automatically recognize Arabic numerals plus 4 auxiliary signs from documents with many lines. The symbol reading rate is 10 documents per minute, with up to 38 information lines each per document (380 lines per minute). The reading rate for symbols in a line is 200 symbols per second for spaced symbols written with a typewriter. Information output is on 80 column punched cards in decimal and binary-decimal code. A block diagram of the entire reader is presented, as well as a plan of the document moving mechanism, the reading chamber, the optical readout device and an overall view of the 'Ruta 701' set and its individual parts.
