GENERAL AVIATION AIRCRAFT OPERATING COSTS.

Abstract

Costs were estimated for representative new general aviation aircraft, average general aviation aircraft in a type group, and aircraft in business and personal use. By type, costs are broken down into variable and fixed costs; by unit, into annual, hourly, per aircraft mile, and per available seat-mile costs. Costs at various utilization rates as well as at utilization rates typical of the aircraft are included. The cost estimates in the report were derived from information from various sources concerning aircraft operating costs and performance. Because the costs are representative or typical of an aircraft in a particular type group rather than actual costs, they do not apply to any specific aircraft. Annual and hourly operating costs for representative new aircraft, for average aircraft in the fleet, and for business and personal aircraft are shown, at utilization rates typical of these aircraft. These and other data are discussed fully in the text. The report also compares the cost of operating an aircraft to the cost of flying by airlines and the cost of operating an automobile. Compared to other modes of travel, the use of a general aviation aircraft for business or personal transportation is generally more expensive. (Author)
