CEREBRAL CORTEX PRINCIPLES INHIBITING THE PITUITARY-ADRENAL AXIS.

Abstract

It was shown that Cerebral Cortex of several mammals contains one or more principles which is/are able to inhibit the pituitary-adrenal axis of the rat. The purification of calf cerebral cortices has given yield to a material which is active at the dose of a few micrograms. Cerebral Cortex principles are able (a) to block the 4.00 p.m. rise in plasma corticosterone in normal rats; (b) to bring back to normal the elevated plasma corticosterone levels which are found in midbrain-sectioned animals and (c) to counteract the activating effect on the pituitary-adrenal axis of 'neurogenic' stresses.
