GROWTH RATE OF INSTABILITIES IN STRATIFIED PLASMAS.

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to investigate effects of a discontinuous, inhomogeneous magnetic field and gravitational effects on the growth rate of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in inhomogeneous plasmas within the framework of ideal MGD. It is shown that an increasing nonuniform magnetic field with a sole component in the direction of the flow has a destabilizing effect as soon as a critical magnetic field is reached. (Author)
