REGIONAL CHANGES IN SHORELINE.

Abstract

The project had as its main goal the completion of several studies on Quaternary shorelines carried over from 1967 plus a few additional studies. A report based upon previous studies of fossils from cores taken off the coast of extreme southern Chile was published; some additional field work was done in the vicinity of La Serena and Coquimbo. It is thought that this region is relatively stable and that the elevated beaches were caused mainly by eustatic changes in sea level. A limited amount of field work was done along the Atlantic coast of the United States; however, the main result of the studies in this area was the publication of a paper recording marine fossils in the Wicomico Formation in South Carolina at an elevation of 75 feet, the highest record for marine Pleistocene along the Atlantic Coast. Brief field work was done on the island of Bimini in the Bahamas, and a list of Quaternary marine mollusks is given. The report on the Pleistocene marine mollusks of Bermuda was completed and a fauna of some 80 species recorded. It is thought that these represent one or more interglacial stages. Fossil mollusks obtained in 1967 from Senegal and Mauritania have been studied. (Author)
