ELECTRON IMPACT IONIZATION OF POSITIVE IONS AND ATOMS USING A COAXIAL BEAM TECHNIQUE.

Abstract

Using a beam superposition technique, the ionization of positive ions and atoms of atmospheric gases is studied. The method of superposition in the present instance, involves the flight along identical linear paths of confined beams of electrons and the relatively heavier particles such as the ions or atoms of oxygen and nitrogen. The large difference in velocity between the electrons and the heavier particles and the long common path they traverse together, enhance the probability of collisions between them leading to ionization. Preliminary results of ionization of N2, N2(+), O2(+), He(+) and A are presented and discussed. (Author)
