THE PRODUCT STRUCTURE OF MEASUREMENTS.

Abstract

In particle momentum measurements, loosely speaking, the result of a multiparticle measurement is the direct product of the result of several single-particle measurements. This built-in product structure for particle momentum measurements forms the basis for a simple presentation of the decomposition principle or cluster structure of the S-matrix. In a previous paper we began the formulation of an S-matrix theory valid for arbitrary measurements. To introduce the decomposition principle into this theory, it is first necessary to investigate the product structure of arbitrary measurements. In the present paper, the fundamental properties of such a product structure are derived from a postulate describing the way two states can be combined to form a single compound state. (Author)
