NUMERICAL MODELS OF A TROPICAL CUMULUS CLOUD WITH BILATERAL AND AXIAL SYMMETRY

Abstract

Comparison of two versions of a numerical model for cumulus convection. One version is symmetrical about a vertical plane; the other, about a vertical axis. It is found that the axisymmetric model grows more vigorously than the other in both speed and strength of development, but more realistically represents the relations between downdraft and updraft. The model, at least with the eddy exchange coefficients used, was found to be deficient in necessary turbulent entrainment.
