A NAI(T1) TOTAL ABSORPTION DETECTOR FOR ELECTRONS AND GAMMA-RAYS AT GEV ENERGIES,

Abstract

The paper reports a new and successful demonstration of the use of total absorption shower detectors for electrons and gamma-rays in the GeV energy range. Such detectors have the following attractive properties: (a) 100 per cent detection efficiency, (b) good energy resolution and (c) large dynamic range. Moreover, there is virtually no upper limit to the energy detectable by this means because the size of the detector varies only logarithmically with the energy of the incident electron or gamma-ray.
