ON THE DETERMINATION OF VERTICAL VELOCITIES IN THE LOWER LAYER OF THE ATMOSPHERE,

Abstract

The Ukrainian Scientific Research Hydrometeorological Institute, in making experimental studies of the evolution of stratus clouds, found that it was necessary to determine the mean velocity of vertical motions by area. After reviewing all methods described in the literature, a method was adopted which divided the area into quadrangles, with wind-sounding stations situated at the corners. Despite the fact that the wind-sounding station network was not dense enough to exclude the possibility for local influences on wind profiles, vertical-motion velocities were determined without constructing wind fields in order to simplify the computations and to make it possible to compute omega at any level. The method was tested in the Kiev area, with calculations of omega made at the 300-, 500-, 1000, and 2000-m levels of the atmosphere, using a grid overlay to determine the projections of the velocities at each level onto the normal of the quadrangle side passing through each station.
