BODIES OF REVOLUTION WITH A MINIMUM DRAG FACTOR AND LOW HEAT TRANSFER AT HIGH SUPERSONIC FLIGHT SPEEDS,

Abstract

On the basis of the modified Newton theory and the theory of self-similar hypersonic flows, an investigation was made of the optimum shape of a body of revolution with a minimum drag factor at supersonic speeds. It is shown that optimum bodies also have a low heat-transfer coefficient -- considerably less than for a conical body. It was established experimentally, that the optimum properties of the examined bodies of revolution are preserved even at moderate supersonic flight speeds. (Author)
