ICOSAHEDRAL CARBORANES. XII. DIRECT FLUORINATION OF o-, m-, AND p-CARBORANE.

Abstract

Reaction of the parent carboranes with excess elemental fluorine in liquid hydrogen fluoride resulted in o-, m-, and p-B10F10C2H2 in yields of 30, 60 and 85%, respectively. Replacement of carbon-bonded hydrogen did not occur; however, perfluoro-m-carborane was obtained by direct fluorination of m-B10H10C2F2. All three B-deca-fluorocarboranes will hydrolyze either on immersion in water or exposure to moist air contrasting the hydrolytic stability of all other B-polyhalocarborane species. (Author)
