NEAR WAKE EFFECTS OF BASE INJECTION.

Abstract

A simple model of the near wake with base injection is developed. Jet and wake mixing data are employed in a one-dimensional homogeneous jet/wake model to obtain mean flowfield properties. Base injection is shown to cool or heat the wake depending on the magnitude of a general injection parameter. Efficient cooling is found to result from supersonic injection of a light gas, and the correlation of temperature data with injection velocity is suggested. The theoretical results are compared to wind tunnel base injection data and satisfactory agreement is obtained. Mach number, body shape and wake transition point effects on the cooling of hypersonic wakes are also discussed. (Author)
