STATISTICAL CALCULATIONS OF ION-MOLECULE KINETICS.

Abstract

The range of applicability of a statistical theory of ion-molecule reaction rates is determined. The theory is then applied to several hypothetical reactions to demonstrate effects of properties of the products on reaction rates. Cross sections and rates for O(+) + N2 to NO(+) + N and N(+) + O2 to NO(+) + O or N + O2(+) are calculated and compared with experiment. It is concluded that the best use of the theory is for calculation of branching ratios. (Author)
