A PROGRAMABLE MULTILEVEL PARALLEL DIGITAL MICROPROCESSOR.
Abstract
The device herein described is a programable digital data processor. Typically the data consists of a set of intensity measurements made by scanning speech spectrograms, photographs, or other two dimensional sources. The microprocessor acts on the raw data as a filter with an arbitrary and programable transfer function. In addition, the effect of the transfer function on a given data point can be made an arbitrary function of the values of neighboring (in two dimensions) data points. The data points are presented serially to the microprocessor at the rate of one per 18 microseconds. All processing of a given data point is accomplished in this 18 microseconds period before the next word is available. Since the input is scanned serially one point at a time, a buffer memory is provided to collect enough scan lines so that a data point and its neighbors are all available. The buffer memory is selectively read out so that a matrix comprised of the data point under consideration and its neighbors is assembled in an array of hardware registers. The outputs of these hardware registers are simultaneously available to eight minor sub-processors which perform mathematical operations on the data matrix. A major sub-processor correlates the results obtained by the minor sub-processors and assembles an output word. Each of the sub-processors is a small (16 word program), independent, general purpose digital computer.
