CONSTRUCTION OF AN INTERNAL THORACIC DUCT FISTULA.
Abstract
Lymphocyte depletion produces readily apparent immunological defects. The major defect lies in delayed sensitivity response and, if controlled, it can result in a more effective method of immunologic suppression in transplantation. The present study was an attempt to develop a method of establishing chronic internal lymphatic diversion and, thereby, produce lymphopenia without the sequelae of fluid, electrolytic and caloric loss. A modified Absolon thoracic duct fistula was devised and tested in ten dogs. However, the results in the eight technically satisfactory dogs were no better than those of Absolon, and no advantage was observed in renal homotransplantation models. This report describes the technique and examines possible reasons for failure when used by this investigator. (Author)
