SHOCK PULSE SHAPING IN AN AIR GUN.
Abstract
The report describes a test method for developing controlled shock pulses such as square waves and half-sines in the air gun. The method uses a metering sleeve, essentially a variable orifice device, to control the air flow behind a piston containing the test item, thus controlling the acceleration. An analysis method is presented for calculating the required orifice area as a function of piston displacement for two given shock pulses. Two recorded waveforms are presented which show good agreement with the analysis. The test method is expected to be most useful in testing ammunition components where high accelerations and high velocity changes are required. (Author)
