ANALYSIS OF POLICIES FOR REPAIR PARTS MANAGEMENT UNDER INTERNATIONAL COOPERATIVE LOGISTICS SUPPLY SUPPORT ARRANGEMENTS.

Abstract

The present inventory system used for supplying spare parts to friendly foreign countries under supply support arrangements (SSA's) maintains separate on hand and on order accounts and separate reorder points. This system was devised so that the participating countries would be assured of the availability of stocks bought expressly for them. It is shown that this inventory system is uneconomical. Several alternative systems are devised and evaluated. It is shown that there are systems which protect the participating country's stock position and are more economical than the present system. A technique called swapping, which reduced backorders substantially when on hand inventory is segregated, is presented. (Author)
