MEASUREMENT OF PAINT FILM THICKNESS BY BETA-RAY BACKSCATTERING.

Abstract

A non-destructive paint thickness gauge using the backscattered beta radiation was developed. This gauge will measure white lead linseed oil paint of thickness ranging from one half to about 30 mils on wood with an error of approximately plus or minus 0.2 mils. The possible use of this gauge with other type pigments on other surfaces is discussed. A graph is given demonstrating the performance of this gauge in measuring the thickness of films of paint.
