Evaluation of Compton Backscatter Technique for Measurements of Ocean Sediment Density.

Abstract

The design and operational data of the Nuclear Sediment Density Meter (NSDM) was reviewed. It appears that several changes should be studied for purposes of improving the characteristics of this type of instrument. A few Monte Carlo calculations using UNC-SAM-2 and SAM-C were carried out for the NSDM type arrangement. Preliminary laboratory measurements were carried out with the objective of providing measured data to be compared to the Monte Carlo results. These experiments can be extended to determine the accuracy of NSDM instruments by measuring materials whose densities have been determined by non-nuclear techniques. (Author)
