A COMPARISON OF COLOR CENTER FORMATION IN KBr AND NaBr.

Abstract

The correlation of KBr and NaBr with X rays has been investigated primarily with the objective of locating the alpha, beta, and gamma bands in NaBr which have not been identified previously. In KBr the alpha, beta, and gamma bands were identified at 6.13 eV, 6.43 eV and 6.58 eV respectively, in substantial agreement with previous workers. In NaBr bands at 5.76 eV, 6.31 eV and 6.49 eV are designated alpha, beta, and beta' respectively. The latter band beta' correlates with the beta band rather than with the alpha band and it is therefore not the gamma band of Klick and Patterson. It remains an open question as to whether the beta' band constitutes evidence for fine structure in the beta band or is the beta analogue of the gamma band, that is due to exciton formation at a n.n.n. anion site to an F center.
