MAGNETIC-CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC ORIENTATION PRODUCED IN FERRITES BY HOT WORKING.

Abstract

Hot forging of barium cobalt ferrite and barium ferrite gives rise to orientation of the crystallites in a polycrystalline body, with the basal planes of the hexagonal unit cells are aligned perpendicular to the forging direction. Microstructurally the body consists of platelets with their small dimension parallel to the c-axis of the crystallographic unit cell and parallel to the forging direction. Magnetic measurements show the magnetic permeability of the oriented borium cobalt ferrite to be two and one-half to three times as great as that of randomly oriented material prepared by hot pressing. At 2000 MHz the relative permeability of the oriented material is 7. Nickel-zinc ferrite with the cubic spinel structure was forged to 60% reduction without appreciable effect on the degree of orientation. (Author)
