THE FLUID TRANSPIRATION ARC AS A RADIATION SOURCE FOR SOLAR SIMULATION.
Abstract
During this period the major effort was expended in determining the optimum conditions for stable operation of the collinear, opposing flow geometry, described in previous reports. Source testing was carried out in the 5 to 10 KW power range at pressures ranging from 50 to 180 psig. Two sources of erratic operating behavior were encountered, analyzed, and corrected. These consisted of a tendency for the column to elongate and to wander off center. The former was corrected by installing an adjustable gap apparatus and determining the optimum gap during each run. The second effect was corrected by appropriate alterations in the sweep gas flow pattern. Measurements of radiant conversion efficiency showed values of over 40% in argon, which compares favorably with higher power sources in xenon. Also completed during this period was the assembly, testing and calibration of the radiometry system. Several initial curves of spectral irradiance were measured, showing improved irradiance of continuum radiation. (Author)
