PLASMA INSTABILITIES AND MHD APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

The report summarizes the plasma research work of the institute during the year 1968 and describes investigations of macroscopic and microscopic instabilities of static and dynamic equilibrium configurations of plasmas with zero and finite electric resistivity including heat conduction, viscous effects, effects due to variable transport coefficients and finite Larmor radius effects. It is shown that an increasing nonuniform magnetic field with a component of the magnetic field in flow direction has a destabilizing effect as soon as a critical value of the magnetic field is reached. The effect of electrical resistivity gradients on instabilities is examined for an inhomogeneous plasma slab. A general algorithm and recurrence formulas have been developed to calculate the initial time behavior of a general plasma configuration. We have done some work on microinstabilities in arbitrary plasma configurations. The efficiency of MHD power generators was investigated. (Author)
