ECOLOGICAL STUDIES ON AMAPARI VIRUS,

Abstract

(1) Amapari virus has been isolated from only two of the many species of rodents and other vertebrates studied at Serra do Navio, Amapa, Brazil. These are Oryzomys capito goeldii and Neacomys guianae. The isolation rate for each species over 4 years was close to 12%. The virus has not been isolated from mosquitoes or sentinel mice, but ectoparasitic laelapid mites from infected rodents have been found positive. (2) Differences have been observed in the composition and distribution of the rodent catch at the three main trapping stations, and in infection rates between capture stations and between the two rodent species. From October 1967 through June 1968 the virus was not detectable in the Neacomys population of the area. (3) Virus has been isolated from the blood, viscera, urine, embryos and young of infected animals. No serological immunity has been demonstrable in infected or uninfected animals by conventional techniques. The evidence favours transmission by contagion or in utero rather than by ectoparasitic vector. (4) Infected Oryzomys have been captured inside a food store, indicating that contamination of food may occur, but no cases of human illness have so far been observed. (Author)
