INFRARED ASTRONOMICAL INSTRUMENTATION: POLARIMETRY AND MULTIPLEX RADIOMETRY.
Abstract
The need for infrared polarimetric measurements of radiation from astronomical bodies is discussed. Various methods are open to us for combining polarimetric and infrared techniques for making such measurements. Two possible techniques were investigated theoretically and a prototype instrument is described that will allow comparison of these methods for measuring the parameters of linearly polarized radiation. Several methods of increasing the efficiency of infrared radiometric systems are considered. One of these, using moire fringes to obtain a Fourier transform of an image intensity distribution is studied in detail; full theory and some experimental results are given. The problems of retrieving the image intensity distribution from its Fourier transform by both analogue and digital methods are investigated. Possible applications of this and other multiplex methods to problems other than infrared radiometry are noted. (Author)
