ATOMIC FLUORESCENCE ANALYSIS AND THE AIR FORCE SPECTROMETRIC OIL ANALYSIS PROGRAM.

Abstract

Methods are being developed to improve analysis of trace wear metals in lubricating oil, directed toward detecting incipient mechanical failures. This report contains: (1) A survey of AFOSR-supported research and the application of this research to methods used by the Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program (SOAP) of the Air Force for wear metal analysis; (2) 'New Atomic Spectroscopic Methods for Trace Analysis describing development of atomic fluorescence spectrometry as a new method of ultra trace element analysis, and its relationship to SOAP.
