CONDITIONS FOR THE OCCURRENCE OF HIGH-VOLTAGE POLARIZATION IN HOMOGENEOUS MEDIA,
Abstract
This is a continuation of earlier work dealing with the processes of generation, recombination and migration of carriers inside an organic semiconducting liquid, and the conditions under which high voltage polarization can occur in such substances. The present article extends the results to include not only organic liquids but all homogeneous condensed bodies in general. It is shown that for most substances under the most prevailing distributions of current density and potential in the space between electrodes no equilibrium space charge is possible in any region where the potential drop exceeds 1.2V, since at this potential the diffusion current cannot compensate for the migration of the carriers under the influence of the field. High-voltage polarization cannot occur in an equilibrium or a quasi-equilibrium current, when the displacement current can be neglected. High-voltage polarization can arise only in a relaxation process when the electric neutrality criterion is violated. The necessary condition for the occurrence of this polarization is that it be difficult for the electrons to penetrate through the layers adjacent to the electrodes.
