CALCULATION OF FLOW VELOCITY AT THE INLET TO THE PUMP IMPELLER OF A HYDRAULIC TORQUE CONVERTER DURING CIRCULATION,

Abstract

A method is proposed for calculating flow velocity for the case of circulating inlet to the pump runner of a hydraulic coupling. A formula is derived which shows the relationship between the meridian and peripheral components of the absolute velocity of the flow, and various initial conditions are considered for determination of these components. Analysis of each special case gives a different law for variation in the given components with respect to the channel cross sections. It is shown that the optimum initial condition for using the equation derived in this paper to determine the meridian and peripheral components of absolute velocity of the flow is the assumption that the angle at which the inlet edges of the pump impeller blades are set is constant with respect to channel width.
