ESTIMATING WIND LOADS ON HIGH STRUCTURES,

Abstract

Results are presented of an analysis of current methods used in and outside of the Soviet Union in calculating the effects of wind loads on high buildings, smoke stacks, towers and similar structures. The characteristics of the wind regime in the atmospheric surface boundary layer analyzed include the frequency of high winds at a proposed or existing installation, the vertical profile of the average wind, and the statistical characteristics of horizontal fluctuations in wind speeds (gusts). Experimental data used in the analysis are taken in part from the published results of studies carried out at a 300-m tower. (Author)
