TOPICS IN ELECTROMAGNETIC SCATTERING FROM A RANDOM PLASMA SLAB.
Abstract
This research paper consists of a series of reports treating topics related to the determination of the energy reflected when a plane electromagnetic wave is normally incident upon a random plasma slab. Random functions suitable for use in computer modeling the electron density fluctuations in a plasma slab are described and their statistical properties are derived. Two equivalent methods are given for generating a series expansion of the mean reflection coefficient using the r.m.s. electron density fluctuation as the expansion parameter. The mean reflection coefficient obtained by one method, based on directly expanding the wave equation and boundary conditions, is evaluated for an electron density fluctuation having the form of a random telegraph signal. The result of the other method, based on the distorted wave Born approximation, is evaluated for a random amplitude fluctuation. (Author)
